How to Draw Cars New Video! | Color Compositions for Digital Paintings

Click here to view the embedded video.

When drawing cars or creating a digital painting, color compositions are really important to help you finalize a color pallet for your digital painting.  It also helps to reduce the intimidation factor of completing a finished rendering.  Once you have your colors chosen, all you have to do is start to refine and add details.

You can perform this also in the analog format using either watercolors, markers, or any other type of mixed media.

How to Draw Cars Now | Best Photo Reference Sites

Photo references are a must when creating realistic looking paintings whether they be by traditional or digital means.  It’s no secret that I am absolutely in love with the 50s, 60s, and 70s racing era so after I was given a link to this site from a relative, I thought I would share it with you.

Goodwood Rival.

In their own words. “The Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the golden era at one of the world’s most authentic circuits.  The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s that relives the glory days of Goodwood Motor Circuit. It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. ”

The  volume of photographic content is just amazing!  Vintage motorcycle racing, grand prix cars, horse racing, men and women dressed up in traditional 50s’ uniforms.  It is quite a site to behold indeed!  Anyone looking for photographs with such a wide range of content to draw from should definitely bookmark this page now!  If you have not checked out my last digital rendering tutorial, I used a photograph from this site to create one of my speed painting videos.  This site will truly inspire you to understand some beautifully composed images.

Be sure to visit the site and start sketching!

How to Drive the new 2013 Viper…Now!

Ok…maybe not now…but definitely soon….like on Forza Motorsports 4.  I know our site primarily discusses car design and sketching techniques but I just could not resist the temptation of posting this. Call it the bias that I have after purchasing an Xbox 360 this past Christmas for …ahem…”other” people in our family to get some home entertainment, not me of course.

In any case, I may be late to the jump on this but if you did not catch this story on Autoblog…definitely check out their article on it below.

The downloadable “Viper Pack” will be available sometime this summer.  I’ll be ready to uh….get this for my …..18 month old son….yeah….that’s it. ;)

Automotive Art Legends | Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman

(all images courtesy of

If you ever want additional boosts of inspiration, be sure to check out Art Fitzpatrick and Van Kaufman.  Mr. Fitzpatrick was originally a designer for GM before delving into commercial illustrations and magazine ads in the 50s-70s.  Fitz teamed up with another gifted commercial artist, Van Kaufman.  Together, they created some of the most stunning paintings to date, depicting iconic General Motors vehicles in various iconic settings.

Fitzpatrick would render the vehicles and Kaufman would focus on completing the background and people.  Their work was incredibly dynamic and few people today, in my opinion, are able to match the harmony and synergy they were able to accomplish together.   Be sure to check this site out and give it the time it deserves to observe the detail, composition, lighting, and just the thrill and excitement that it communicates in every painting.  These are scenes that are essentially a slice of Americana….the “good old days” so to speak.

I am always amazed with such old school art.  Which is why I preach to students, that learning the basics and fundamentals in drawing are key before ever jumping into the digital realm.  Not to mention, painting using gouache paints is extremely difficult as it is essentially one of the hardest mediums to work with due to its opaque characteristics.  It only further reinforces how masterful Fitzpatrick and Kaufman were.

Click on the link below to go through their work.  Prepare to be stunned!

How to Draw Cars | Photoshop Speed Rendering

Welcome to yet another video tutorial on photoshop speed painting.  We are going to continue on with some speed paintings that will help you to draw cars from reference photographs.  Reference photographs are always useful to train your mind to see the photos as a collection of shapes, value, texture, and patterns.  Matte painters in the movie industry always have this wonderful knack of making their paintings look  photo realistic from a distance.  This is not because they render each and every detail but rather understand how to create these “patterns” and “shapes” quickly in order to indicate the complexity.

Step back, relax and watch the video.  Hopefully you will learn something new ;)  Oh…yeah….special thanks to Goodwood Revival which is an organization dedicated to helping drivers and spectators relive the glorious motor sport days of the 40s, 50s, and 60s racing era.  They have just stunning photography that captures the intensity and energy of the races.  I used one of their photographs for this demonstration.

How to Draw Cars Video! – Two Point Perspective Templates Part 1

I gotta say I am pretty excited about the next round of videos coming up!  I want to make sure that drivenmavens ends up being the gift that keeps on givin….especially for those who purchased our first commercial product, How  to Draw Cars Now: Analog vs. Digital Drawing Techniques.

These next round of videos will hopefully keep you engaged and interested in your dvd set by actually giving you some homework! (What?! Do my ears deceive me? I actually have to work on this?! YES!!!)  So we are going to kick off the first video on the Perspective Templates that were on Disc number 2.

The objective for the templates at the beginning is to experiment with different primitive shapes.  Before starting this lesson be sure to do the following:

1.  Spend 15 min warming up with drawing lines.  Try to make them as parallel as you can to each other.  If you need a reminder, pop the first disc in that covers warm up exercises.

2.  Relax….it’s no big deal ;)  You’re just drawing some boxes with a little bit of basic form

3.  Get into the mindset of learning…you are not here to impress anyone…you are just here to learn and get better.

4. After watching the video …be sure to practice the technique immediately.  Don’t wait till the next day, tackle it straight on.  I suggest you print several pages of the template and try to complete 5 pages.  There are two templates per page so you should have completed 10 drawings in total as a start.  Remember that handy little insert booklet that has the practice schedule? Now would be a good time to look at it ;)

Product Design Blogs|China Design Hub

Most of you who have read my articles understand why it is important to expand and constantly challenge yourself to learn new concepts and ideas.  A couple weeks ago I published an article, “Four Steps to Reinvent Yourself by Drawing Cars!.”  If you did not catch it, check it out here!

That being said, the first step talks about acquiring knowledge.  Reading other blogs that have a different perspective about design always helps you to re-interpret and see ideas in a different light….which may help you to “connect the dots” for your future ideas.

Waikit Chung, founder of the popular product design blog ,, has just launched his new site,  Before getting into his new website however, I briefly wanted to discuss the contents of product design hub.  What I find particularly compelling about Waikit’s style is his passion to educate the design community about processes related to executing products.  Waikit has several professionals and students that write about their experiences when working with companies developing products.  This is an invaluable resource for students considering a career in product design or for current students that look for guidance for their career path.

Product design hub is rich with several resources that delve into topics like design process, design insights, advice, designer interviews, and plenty more.  However, the world has drastically changed and we are truly submerged in a global competitive market where countries like China, India, and others are “hungry” to prove that they can also be creative and innovate.  Despite what some of us might think about certain countries and capabilities, Waikit created to show the design community that our Chinese counterparts in the design field can also innovate and be creative thinkers.

Spin Ceramics, for example, creates these beautifully elegant and timeless ceramic pieces that represents their understanding of creating designs that reflect the beauty of their heritage.  The shapes are so simple and pure.  Be sure to check out the blog post on this particular item here

Like the ceramic products above, there are several posts that showcase China’s talent in the design field.  Cruise over to and spend some time checking out some of their products.  You may also check out Waikit’s blog and product design work here:

Once again, I would like to thank Waikit for bringing awareness to the talent that exists across the globe.

Montreal Meets 2|Kickstarter Campaign by a Designer for Designers

Friends! Please take note of this Kickstarter project by Francois Hoang. Francois, an accomplished graphic designer and writer for popular design blog, Abduzeedo, started Montreal Meets in Canada.

Montreal Meets is a non profit organization that seeks to spread the value of design through speaking events. They need help to generate enough funds to bring in key designers and entrepreneurs to speak about their experiences and educate engineers, designers, and students about the latest trends within design. In Francois own words “The concept is simple. To connect each one of us with the creative world. To create events that will make people get inspired by the design industry, especially from the masters. It’s also an opportunity for you to learn from the visionnaries. This is our main goal, it’s their gift. It’s our legacy!”

I am all about educating upcoming designers!  If you are interested in helping to fund this project, please contribute or help spread the word to get it funded!

Be sure to also check out Francois’ website at  It is a visual treat!

Four Steps to help Reinvent Yourself by Drawing Cars!

It’s been a very hectic Holiday season and we have been working like crazy!   So I finally have a little downtime before preparing to launch our first educational DVD set on drawing cars in a few weeks! I wanted to start off by bringing up an interesting topic about drawing cars and how it can help reinvent yourself.  It’s an odd connection indeed but bare with me.

How do you keep on top of your game or try to excel above and beyond your expectations?   Competition is stiff….whether you are a student or a professional.  In todays world, you must constantly try to make yourself a valuable player…especially in the automotive field.  So how do you start creating that “value” to not only your employer but more importantly, yourself.  It really doesn’t matter whether you are a student or a professional.   Creating value and self worth works across the board at any age.

Some students have ambitions to excel in their particular field of expertise.  Once they graduate, they work for a company and try to increase their knowledge on the subject matter that they love.  In essence, they seek to build their confidence in the working environment putting to practice what they have learned from college and learning from their colleagues at work.

So what does this have to do with how to draw cars?  Well…how to draw cars in this case is just a metaphor to building your knowledge base and exercising your brain to do something difficult.  On the Driven Mavens blog, we have architects, designers, engineers, drawing hobbyists, students, etc…that have a desire to improve a part of themselves that was either left dormant or were afraid to act on their passion.  Believe it or not, drawing cars, or doing something that you are intimidated about or fearful of, helps to build your confidence!

So why is any of this important?  Well confidence helps you to believe in yourself.  Sometimes it is necessary for you to go above and beyond and redefine who you are.  I have 4 steps that will help you to either redefine or reinvent  yourself which will in turn help you to influence others!

1.  Knowledge -> 2.  Confidence ->3.  Empowerment ->4. Influence -> Change!

First step is to acquire knowledge.  Knowledge  helps to keep you informed and builds depth to your ideas and work.  Building your knowledge base can help you improve your understanding of how things work and function.  Without it, leaves you with a sort of ignorance that can prevent your ideas from reaching their unrealized potential.  The more you know the better off you are.  However, you have to have intellectual curiosity so to speak.  You have to essentially want to learn new material constantly.

Second step is to build your confidence.  The more knowledge you have the more confident it makes you.  Nothing better than feeling that you have a strong grasp of a particular subject matter or several subjects.  To be able to talk about a certain subject because you have researched it so well will build your confidence ten fold!  All you have to do is take an interest, read, and be curious.  Being confident in yourself and your work is crucial for your success.   It’s hard to excel at something and continue marching forward if you constantly think you suck!  However…avoid overconfidence…no one likes working with a “know it all” jerk.

Third step is to empower yourself.  Confidence will eventually lead to empowerment!  The more confident you become as a result of acquiring knowledge over the years, the better equipped you are at making key decisions in your life and goals for the future.  This confidence helps you to utilize the strengths within you and EMPOWER you to act! That is totally juice!

Fourth step is to be influential.  You can’t have an impact without having some influence.  With empowerment comes influence.  The more confident you are with what you know and how you present the information to others, leaves you with the ability to influence others!  Seriously….this is so cool!  To be able to influence others due to your own drive, passion, and expertise in your area, is nothing short of utter coolness!  If others can see the passion in you, they feel better about you…as long as you don’t sound like the Sham Wow dude!

At the end of the day, you will ultimately hope that your hard work and dedication, has some impact.  Maybe you designed a product that made someone’s life a little easier…or you created this sweet illustration that created some emotional response from a viewer.  Perhaps you quite simply “changed” yourself for the better and became what you envisioned yourself to be.

The overall message here  is to do anything in your power to help improve yourself from every perspective; to expose your mind to subjects that are difficult to comprehend but have a hunger and thirst to tackle and learn.  If you are an engineer, learn something new about Industrial Design.  If you are a designer, try to learn something new about engineering.  That is the key to creating VALUE for yourself and build your self confidence.  Even something that seems as disconnected as drawing cars, somehow finds its connection in the overall scheme of building your knowledge because it helps you to appreciate and respect the very discipline of drawing.

Remember …again…. Knowledge -> Confidence ->Empowerment ->Influence -> Change!

Catch you next time!
